Why Use Fiber Optic Lighting?

Fiber optics can be used to transmit light from a source to a remote location for lighting and communication. In fact, the optical fiber can not only transmit light, but also emit light along with the fiber itself, so it is similar to a neon lamp tube. There are many applications of optical fiber lighting, usually based on the special properties of optical fiber and its unique characteristics.

The use of optical illuminators has many advantages, some of which are more important than others for special types of applications.

Non-thermal lighting: Because the light source is far away, the fiber can transmit light, but it can isolate the heat of the light source from the lighting point. This is an important consideration for lighting fragile objects (such as museum exhibition halls), because these items may be damaged by heat or strong light.

Electrical safety: Since the optical fiber is non-conductive, and the power source of the light source can be placed in a safe place, you can use fiber optic lighting to safely perform underwater lightings, such as underwater lighting used in swimming pools and fountains or lighting in hazardous environments. Even many lamps are low voltage.

Precise spotlights: Fiber optics can be used in conjunction with lenses to provide carefully focused light on very small spots, which is very popular in museum exhibits and jewelry displays, or just to illuminate specific areas precisely.

Durability: Using fiber optic lighting can make the lighting more durable. Plastic or fiberglass is both strong and flexible and much more durable than fragile bulbs.

Neon Light Appearance: The optical fiber that emits light along the length, usually called the edge-emitting fiber, has the appearance of a neon tube, which can be used for decorative lighting and signs. Fiber is easier to manufacture, and because it is made of plastic, it is less fragile. Due to the long illumination distance, it can be placed at either or both ends of the fiber, and because the light source is a low-voltage power source, the light source can be safer.

Change colors: By using color filters with white light sources, fiber optic lighting can have many different colors, and by automating the filters, the colors can be changed in any pre-programmed order.

Simpler installation: Fiber optic lighting does not require cables to be installed on the locator, nor does it require large lamps with one or more bulbs. Instead, install the fiber at that location and fix it in place, perhaps with a small focusing lens fixture, the process is much simpler. Generally, multiple optical fibers can use one light source, which further simplifies installation.

Easy to maintain: Lighting in hard-to-reach areas (such as high ceilings or tight spaces) may make it difficult to replace the light source. Using optical fiber, the light source can be placed in an easily accessible location, while the optical fiber can be placed in any remote place. Changing the source is no longer a problem.
